bookcased.ai is a reading app — your reading life as a real 3D bookcase, with daily check-ins, margin notes,
book clubs, and a social writing layer (the Notepad). This policy explains what the
bookcased.ai app (iOS and web) collects, how it's used, and the control you have over it.
What we collect
Account: the email address and username you sign up with.
Your library & reading: the books on your shelf, your ratings and reviews, reading
progress, margin notes, finishing dates, and your taste profile derived from your ratings.
Your writing & social activity: the notes/posts you publish, book-club posts and
replies, likes, reposts, bookmarks, the readers you follow, and your public profile (if you make it public).
Camera & photos: only when you choose to scan a book's cover, set a profile portrait,
or attach an image to a post. See "Camera and photos" below.
Letters (direct messages): the messages you exchange with other readers. See "Letters"
below.
Push token: if you turn on reading reminders, a device push token so we can send them.
Usage events: in-app activity such as which posts you view or interact with, used to rank
your feed. First-party only.
A short onboarding survey (two multiple-choice questions about your reading habits), used
in aggregate only.
We do not use third-party advertising, do not track you across other apps or
websites, and do not sell your data.
Camera and photos
The camera and photo library are used only when you choose to scan a book's cover, set a
profile portrait, or attach an image to a post. We never access them otherwise.
When you scan a cover, the image is read by our book-identification service to fill in the
title and author, and the cover you keep is stored as part of your book (in a private bucket, served via
short-lived signed links). Deleting the book deletes its cover images.
When you scan a cover you can also share it to the community cover pool for that book — an
opt-in toggle shown at the moment you scan. A shared cover is a public copy other readers can pick for the
same book; you can remove your shared covers at any time, which deletes the image.
A profile portrait you set is stored and shown wherever your profile appears. Removing it
in Edit profile deletes it.
An image you attach to a post is stored (in a private bucket, served via short-lived signed
links) because it is part of the content you chose to publish.
Letters (direct messages)
Letters you exchange with another reader are stored so your correspondence works across your devices. They
are visible only to you and the reader you're writing with — never in any public feed.
You can report any letter and block any reader from the conversation itself. Blocking ends the
correspondence immediately.
Deleting a letter removes it for both sides. Deleting your account removes your conversations.
Push notifications
Reminders are off until you turn them on. When you do, we store a device push token to deliver the daily
reading reminder. You can turn reminders off any time in the app (Account settings) or in iOS Settings, which
removes the token.
What's public vs private
Your profile is private by default. Your shelf, reviews, and notes become visible to others —
in the public feed and on your shareable profile page — only if you make your profile public, which you can
toggle on or off at any time. Notes posted with a "just me" audience always stay private. Margin notes stay
private to you until you choose to publish a review.
How we use it
To show your bookcase and reading life, to power book clubs and the social feed when you opt in, to sharpen the
book recommendations the app makes for you, and to send reminders you've enabled. Survey answers are used in
aggregate to understand our readers.
Where it's stored & who processes it
Data is stored with Supabase (database +
file storage) with row-level security so you can only access your own data; the site and APIs are hosted on
Vercel; transactional email (confirming your
address, reminders) is sent via Resend; and a
book-cover photo you submit for identification is processed transiently by
Anthropic (Claude) and not used to
train its models.
Keeping and deleting your data
You can edit or remove any individual note, review, or book on your shelf at any time.
You can delete your account from Account settings. This permanently removes your profile,
shelf and books, ratings and reviews, reading sessions and margin notes, notes and posts (with their
replies, likes, reposts, and bookmarks), the readers you follow, your book-club memberships and posts, any
images you attached to posts, your push token, and your survey response. This cannot be undone.
Children
bookcased.ai is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update the date above. Material changes will be reflected here before they take
effect.
